How to analyze chess games

A two-pass process for learning from your decisions before consulting Stockfish or AI explanations.

Core principle

Chess knowledge becomes skill when a player recognizes positional clues, calculates responses, and reviews the outcome. Memorizing names or evaluations is not enough. Treat each section as a sequence: understand the concept, replay an example, solve positions, and record why errors happened.

Analysis is the engine of that progress: it is what turns scattered games into data about yourself. A player who analyzes five games with a method learns more than one who plays fifty without reviewing any. Engine-free reconstruction

Analysis begins before you turn on any engine. Reopen the game and reconstruct, move by move, what you were thinking at each moment: what the plan was, what you feared, why you chose that move. This honest record is the most valuable data in the analysis, because the engine shows the best move but not why you went wrong. Write it in plain text or as comments in the PGN; the goal is to capture your reasoning while it is still fresh.

Candidate moves

At the key moments, stop and list two to four candidate moves before deciding. The quality of your analysis depends on how broad your candidates are: most mistakes come not from miscalculating but from never considering the right move. For each candidate, calculate the opponent's strongest reply — not the most likely, but the one that bothers you most. A plan is only sound if it survives the best defense.

Critical moments

Not every move deserves the same attention. A game usually has three to six critical moments — points where the evaluation could change decisively. Learn to recognize them: exchanges that define the structure, the instant before an attack, the transition into the endgame, or any move played on impulse. Concentrating analysis on these points pays off far more than commenting on thirty neutral moves.

A good sign of a critical moment is the time spent: where you thought for a long time, or where you should have thought and did not. Flag those moves and treat each as a small problem to solve on its own.

Engine verification

Only after recording your reasoning should you turn on the engine — and use it as a checker, not an oracle. The engine answers "what" (which move is best), but it is up to you to discover "why." When it points to a better move, go back and understand which principle you violated: a tactic you missed, a piece left passive, a weak square ignored. Translate the numeric evaluation into a sentence you can reuse in a future game.

Avoid the habit of scrolling through engine lines move by move without thinking. It feels productive but produces no learning. Prefer a few positions understood deeply over the whole game "checked" superficially.

Turning errors into a study plan

Analysis is only worth it if it becomes training. At the end of each reviewed game, write a single concrete lesson — "calculate checks before moving," "don't trade the good bishop," "activate the rook in endgames" — and one theme to practice. After ten games you will have a list of recurring patterns that points exactly to where you should invest time, instead of studying random topics.

A 30-minute session template

Use the first five minutes to review two old positions and explain their patterns. During the next fifteen, work on three to five new positions: write candidates, calculate without moving, and only then reveal the solution. Reserve five minutes to classify each error as vision, calculation, evaluation, or haste. Finish by choosing one position to revisit another day.

Once a week, replace the session with a slow game and analysis. Mark uncertain moments, reconstruct your reasoning before opening an engine, and compare the game with trained themes. If a pattern appears in exercises but not in games, slow down and include more unlabeled positions.

Completion criterion
