Discovered check with tempo

Annotated puzzle with FEN, solution, pattern explanation, and common mistakes: Discovered check with tempo.

FEN: 4k3/8/8/8/2B5/3R4/8/4K3 w - - 0 1

Position objective

Find the most forcing move without moving the pieces. Inventory checks, captures, threats, and pieces with more than one duty. Then choose a candidate and search for the most resilient defense.

Annotated solution

Bb5+

Moving the bishop uncovers the rook while the released piece creates another threat.

The value of the move is not merely its immediate result. Notice which defender loses a duty, which square becomes controlled, and why the reply is limited. Replay both sides; a combination is calculated only when you understand the best defense.

Why tempting moves fail

Automatic captures can release a flight square or trade the main attacker. Checks without continuation merely relocate the king. Slow moves let the opponent repair a loose piece or build a defense. Compare candidates by the final position and strength of the reply, not the appearance of move one.

Common errors and review

Review this position after one or two days. Before viewing the solution, say aloud which clue activates the pattern. If you remember only the move, change board orientation or compare another position with the same theme.

Transfer exercise

Hide the solution and rebuild the position from FEN. Move one defender to another square and ask whether the combination still works. Then remove the initial check and search for a second candidate. These small changes force reasoning about piece functions instead of repeating remembered coordinates.

Now find a similar position in one of your games. It need not contain the same line; it only needs the main clue, such as an overloaded defender, trapped king, or tempo attack. Record your played move, tactical candidate, and the defense that concerned you most.
